On my personal blog i have ranted* more than once about centralized communities where censorship is technically possible. After we have seen how YouTube deletes thousands of videos due to copyright claims now another Web 2.0 prime example gets bad karma from its community. Flickr employed censorship-like mechanisms filtering photos flagged as ‘moderate’ or ‘restricted’ for users that have specified a certain home country, e.g. Germany. While community operators stress that they have “no intention of censoring the content” the Flickr software – as any centralized community’s architecture – makes censorship technically very easy. Yet, it doesn’t seem to be a comfortable situation for Flickr staff these hours as resistance seems to be quite strong. Somewhat comparable to the Digg incident.
* I have also ranted against the fact that sharing and social relations are increasingly embedded in commercial and profit-driven contexts. At the end of the day Yahoo!, News Corporation, CBS Interactive, and Holtzbrinck are in it for the money. I am not sure if i trust them enough for maintaining the infrastructure for some of the social interaction i engage in.
Hmm. Recht haste. Irgendwie sollte einem das Bauchschmerzen machen. Bei mir zwickts jedenfalls gewaltig. Wie siehts denn aus mit deiner Medizin? Bis jetzt teile ich ja noch keine Photos mit anderen.
Ich bin / wir sind dran. Du kannst sie jetzt schon nutzen, d.h. installieren, aber ich garantiere bzw verspreche keine Aufwärtskompatibilität der Daten. Also Atomique ist noch prototypisch. Aber ich strebe an, dass Ende des Sommers (~September), eine brauchbare Version verfügbar ist.
Habe Euch über den Eintrag bei Spreeblick gefunden — klingt nach einem interessanten Konzept. Wenn ihr potenzielle NutzerInnen sucht, wäre es vermutlich gar nicht so blöd, jetzt ein bißchen in den Flickr-Protestgruppen und -Threads Werbung zu machen …
Hallo Till, ja, im Prinzip hast du da Recht. Aber im Moment brauchen wir eher Entwickler als Nutzer :\ Der Unmut bei Flickr & Co wird nicht auf diese Vorfälle beschränkt bleiben. Also wenn du Lust hast mitzumachen, es gibt viel zu tun…
Aber auch einen Aufruf um interessierte Entwickler zu sammeln, wäre gar nicht so falsch. Danke für den Hinweis.
